Backyard Camping
We wanted to try a weekend of camping, with low risk. So, as a compromise we decided to camp in our back yard - hah! Seemed like an excellent idea at the time. Paul was a champion and set up our campfire, all of our tents and blow up beds and cribs! It was a labor intensive set up - we even had a fan and sound machine, haha! It was backyard "glamping"! Speaking of "glamping", we really enjoyed our tents and I thought I would pass along the information. The big tent was a Coleman Evanston 6-Person Dome Tent with Screen Room, and our smaller tent we received from our wedding is now au pair headquarters. This tent was a Coleman Sundome 4-Person Tent! Both have been great and are family friendly, we especially love the screen room. Anyway...
That evening we started by having a campfire, we roasted some Maplewood Meats brats, german campfire bread (compliments of Lovis), and some marshmallows. It was a lot of fun and of course delicious. After dinner we threw all the dishes in the sink, much easier than hauling them to wash in a basin at the campsite! We got the kids snuggled into bed and continue the campfire into the evening.
An hour or so later the adults decided to head to bed and try for some sleep. We shortly found out why you drive AWAY from the city to camp:
Streetlights, very bright street lights
Sirens
Construction vehicles
House motion detection lights
Neighbors/walkers
Even with the white noise, the sounds were blasting, ahah!! It was hilarious, Paul and I were awake all night looking at each other and laughing at the absurdity of camping in the middle of the city. It was definitely going to take some adjustment to get used to the "ambient" noise. The construction crew rolled in around 2AM to pick up some wide load vehicles. Paul finally cut his losses and went in the house because he was on day call at the hospital and needed to get sleep. I held down the tent, and of course, our kids were sleeping like logs - until 5:30AM.
In order to continue the fun I took the boys and camped out again on Saturday night - because I love them, but really for no other reason, ahah! I hope my toddler liked it. It was exhausting. After our camping exhaustion, we got the biggest Starbucks possible (a perk of camping in the city I guess), and made blueberry muffins.
Camping in the city was memorable, but I am not rushing to repeat the experience. Are you a camper?? Camping with little kids? Any tricks we can borrow?!
