We were driving back to Wisconsin when we received a call that my dear Grandfather, my mom's dad passed away peacefully in his sleep. Earlier that week he mentioned to his friends and his family that what he wanted for Xmas was to be with his wife, Dorothy. While it is always too soon for those of us here on earth who want to surround ourselves in his love and life forever, his prayers were answered and he was called to be with his wife. He was still just as with it in his 90's as he was in his earlier years, and it was an absolute treasure to have so many wonderful times and memories with my grandfather. I am so thankful for the years, the love and the time with him.

He surely made an impact on this earth. I think his obituary says so much about his life, so I wanted to include it here:

"Oneida - John G. Van Boxtel, Sr., 93, of Oneida, passed away peacefully Friday morning, December 22, 2017, at Forest Glen Assisted Living in Seymour. He was born October 16, 1924, son of the late Theodore and Dora (Willems) Van Boxtel. John got his Christmas wish, to reunite with his best friend and companion for over 70 years, his wife Dorothy, who he has missed dearly since her passing.John was one of the sons of immigrants from Holland, he started school without knowing any of the English language. When he was in 5th grade his mother passed away, and he needed to stay on the farm to work and could no longer further his education. His determination and drive never let his lack of education hold him back.He met the love of his life, Dorothy Verheyden, in Isaar, and was united in marriage on June 9, 1945, having celebrated 70 years together. Dorothy preceded him in death on September 10, 2015. After marrying Dorothy John never slowed down.

With his wife at his side and seven hard working children, he became one of the Seymour/Oneida area's successful and advanced farmers. He expanded his operation to over 600 acres with one of the first milking parlors, and over 200 head of dairy cows. He was head of the NFO (National Farmer's Organization) for most of the 60's and 70's. He also ventured into running a sawmill and lumber company. He continued his love and knowledge of the farming industry, and started Schaumann Structures, which focused on farm and agricultural buildings.He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling while at their cottage in Eagle River. Another favorite gathering place has been at the pavilion by the family pond.During all this hard work, and long hours, he kept time for his family, friends, and his faith, being an active member of St Joseph Catholic Church in Oneida. He made sure to donate help and equipment to support any fundraisers in need. Later in life, John and Dorothy would spend time in the winters in Arizona, and enjoyed it the most when family would visit.John loved his family the most and was very involved in their lives. He loved building things and teaching his kids and grandchildren the values of hard work and positive ideas.

He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and has touched the hearts of many people over the past 93 years. Dad told good stories and had a great sense of humor, and took the time to get to know people. He will be missed by us all.

John is survived by his children: Gary (Barb) Van Boxtel, Sliver Cliff; John Jr. "Butch" (Barb) Van Boxtel, Seymour; David (Chris) Van Boxtel, Oneida; Deb (Curt) Marsh, Hobart; Theresa (Michael) Havlik, Suamico; Doreen (Tim Hodkiewicz) Phillips, Green Bay; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; sisters-in-law: Norma Gerrits, Lorraine (Elmer) Vander Velden, and Anita Ver Heyden.

He is preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Jane (Bruce) Nagel; grandson, Joel Marsh; brothers: Martin Van Boxtel and William Van Boxtel; sister, Theadora Weckworth; three brothers-in-law: Donald, Earl and Harvey; three sisters-in-law: Martha, Stella and Eleanor."

We couldn't have been more fortunate to have such a leader and grandfather to demonstrate that life comes with joy, sorrow, adventure, family, love and service. He embodied stability, and love and most of all, joy. I remember fondly his lip quivering when he would tell a funny story, and the smile that he had on his face and in his eyes. He will surely be missed.

My oldest son was fortunate to meet him during our times back in Wisconsin and spend a few moments on his lap for a hug and a photo. My second son had the honor of being born on his birthday - a gift that is too perfect to be coincidence. I had my son just a few moments after midnight. My grandpa was so scared for me because he was measuring so big, and when he found out I had him on his birthday, he was so thrilled and proud of me for powering through. This year we were brought life, and we had to say goodbye. Its an honor for Matthew to share his birthday, and I am forever grateful!
